Chaqar is a fan of open source software. Here are several pieces of software we use regularly:
- Python, quoting Wikipedia, is a general-purpose, high-level programming language. Its design philosophy emphasizes programmer productivity and code readability.
- Django is a high-level Python Web framework that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design.
- Ubuntu is a debian-based linux distribution. We use it for all our primary workstations. Of course, we also have Windows XP, Vista, and 7 available for windows development and testing.
- Firefox is an open-source web browser widely credited with starting "Browser Wars II". Chaqar does all of it's initial web development using Firefox and the incredible add-on Firebug. Testing is done with all major browsers including Internet Explorer.
- Emacs is an open-source text editor. Matthew uses it extensively for django and python development as well as general system administration tasks. He will probably be writing about his ongoing learning of Emacs as well as the plugins PyMacs and RopeMacs in technology updates.
- Inkscape is a Vector Graphics Editor, similar to Adobe Illustrator. Chaqar's logo was created with Inkscape.
- Scribus is professional layout and publishing software. Chaqar uses this for things like business cards and brochures.
- Xiphos is a Bible study tool for Linux systems with the Gnome Desktop environment. In addition to using this for personal study, Matthew is a developer for this project. He was responsible for the initial port to Windows and still maintains it, as well as fixing bugs and adding features.
